Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device or BAIID

Drinking and driving is one of the more egregious crimes in our society and because of this, Michigan legislators have become increasingly tougher on those who commit the crime. One of the ways Michigan has cracked down on these offenses is to require those who have been convicted of two or more alcohol related offenses within seven years or three offenses within ten years to install a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device or BAIID. Furthermore, even if you have only one Operating While Intoxicated conviction on your record but had a BAC higher than .17, you may be required to install a BAIID if you want a restricted driver’s license. The BAIID first started being used around the United States in the 1980s. The system requires a driver to blow into a breathalyzer to check that the driver has not been drinking before the car can be started. In March of 2016, Michigan tightened its regulation of BAIIDs. In Michigan, a car cannot start unless the drivers BAC is 0.025 or lower. It will also ask drivers to blow into the device while driving to ensure that drivers cannot cheat the system. To prevent drivers from having a friend blow into the device, all Michigan BAIIDs must be equipped to take a snapshot of the person using the breathalyzer. If a driver fails three start-up steps, one driving retest, or tampers with his or her BAIID, the car will be totally locked-out.With all that said, a BAIID offers a fantastic option to those who want to learn from their mistakes and move forward in their rehabilitation without having a suspended license.
