MI Receives $36.9 Million for Opioid Crisis
Michigan has been at the center of the opioid crisis for years. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has worked tirelessly to protect residents from the horror of the opioid epidemic, but doing so has cost the state millions. Funding from the federal government has been awarded to aid efforts and help repair communities across MI.
$36.9 Million
The Biden Administration has awarded Michigan nearly $38.9 million to support efforts to end the opioid crisis and aid recovery. The funding is earmarked for the state to boost access to treatment for addiction recovery and remove barriers to clinical interventions and support. In other states that have received funding, it has been allocated for 24/7 opioid treatment programs and overdose education in addition to purchasing more naloxone.
The money sent to Michigan is part of a $1.5 billion program called the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Tribes in the state have also received federal funding. Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa and other tribes have received between $475,000-240,000 each.
The funding is much needed for a state that had nearly 3,000 deaths in 2021. Already in 2022 the state has reported over 588 deaths so far.
